Colac footballer Cooper Stephens is among just eight bottom-aged players in Vic Country’s initial squad for this year’s national championships.
Selectors named the Geelong Falcons footballer in its 58-man squad, which AFL Victoria released on Friday.
The group was set to take on Vic Metro in trial games at Ikon Park yesterday when the Colac Herald went to print.
The trial games are the first stage of selecting final squads for the AFL Under-18 Championships, which begin on the Queen’s Birthday weekend.
Vic Country will start its 2018 campaign interstate against the Allies on June 9.
Colac senior coach Kane Leersen said state football was a great opportunity for 17-year-old Stephens, who has represented the state a number of times in the past, including co-captaining Vic Country at under-16 level last year.
“It’s really exciting for him, from talking to people working with him in Geelong, they rate his talent and his approach to football really highly,” Leersen said.
