Country week boost

Irrewarra’s Bryce McDonald and Colac West duo Dylan Flanigan and Deakin Carmichael will help the CDCA take two Country Week teams to Bendigo next week.

The Colac District Cricket Association’s presence at the Bendigo Country Week will double in 2018.

Officials will send a second side to next week’s tournament, a squad brimming with top-grade talent to step into the Division Two ranks for the first time in the association’s three-year history at the week-long event.

Colac West gun Dylan Flanigan will captain the team, with cameos from Warrion export and former premier cricketer Locky Inglis and Alvie leader Andre DeLorenzo during the week to mentor impressive teenagers like Cullan Spence, Dylan Slater and Bryce McDonald in the side.

Warrion South African import Jarrod Alberts will skipper the Division Three team with help from experienced City United cricketer Dave Treweek.

The majority of Alberts’ line-up is made up of under-17 cricketers or teenagers currently playing in the CDCA Division One ranks.

Former association boss Shane Vicary, who sparked the move to Bendigo in 2015, said exposing young cricketers to more representative cricket was a key factor behind sending a second side to the competition this year.

“It’s just a continuation of what we’ve done the past two years,” he said.

“It’s not so much a rep team like Melbourne Country Week, but a chance to give young cricketers a chance to play representative cricket at senior level.

“We’ve got two sides this year, with one a bit more of a senior side to test the Division Two competition.”

The CDCA was forced to pull its side from the Melbourne Country Week carnival due to the timing of the February event.

Mr Vicary said cricketers had thrown their support behind the Bendigo-based tournament during the infancy stages of the Colac district’s time at event.

“It’s been an awesome response,” he said.
