Stallion’s ton saves the day

Colac’s Michael Tomkins scored the first Division One century of the season in the Stallions’ two-day win against Alvie.

The first Division One ton of the Colac district cricket season has sparked Colac to victory in its two-day clash with Alvie.

Experienced Colac batsman Michael Tomkins came in when the Stallions were in trouble at 4-33, and put in a match-saving knock of 103 to lead his team to victory.

He enjoyed a 74-run partnership with experienced batsman Stewart Sutherland, 39 runs.

Colac co-captain Alex White said he was rapt the players were able to dig in when the pressure was on, setting up the biggest score of the round, 232.

“We had a bit of a shaky start, Alvie obviously has a pretty good bowling attack and got a couple of wickets early,” he said.

“But then Stewy and Mick came together and turned things around.

“Mick’s knock was brilliant, he’s been great all year and easily our most consistent, he’s gotten us out of trouble on more than one occasion and Saturday was probably the best example of that.
