Irrewarra cricket officials have earmarked Bryce McDonald and Kaden Beckett as future captains, with the teenagers taking on leadership roles this season.
Beckett and McDonald will assist skipper Dave Jackson as vice-captains for the Redbacks’ 2017-18 campaign which starts against Alvie this Saturday.
The duo enjoyed breakout seasons with the ball in 2016-17, combining for 49 wickets while also making handy runs with the bat.
Jackson said the club was eager to find the next generation of leaders, gearing up for a new-look Division One side in future campaigns.
Ex-skipper Leighton Hart has crossed to Birregurra this season, while gloveman Sam Kelly is set to step back to the Redbacks’ lower grades.
Jackson said Beckett and McDonald were ready to ramp up their presence at the club on and off the field in 2017-18.
“They’re taking on that role and they’re also coaching the under-17s,” he said.
“They’ve been around for a few years and shown plenty of potential so it’s probably time for them to turn that into form, which they’ve both shown signs of over the last few years.
“They’re both our next leaders and one of them will probably captain the club in the future, so it’s probably time to give them a bit of a leadership role to give them a bit more of an understanding of the game.”
Jackson said the club was also excited to hand the number one keeping position to Lachie Mulder this season after the teen had worked closely under Kelly’s guidance.
“I think he’ll be one of the best keepers in the competition, he’s keen and learning well,” he said.
