Star forward injured in blockbuster clash

Birregurra’s Roy Armistead is pictured making a desperate lunge for Roo Josh Woods.

Birregurra football officials will assess a reported hamstring injury to star forward Christian Kelly this week.

The league’s leading goalkicker left the field in the first term of the Saints’ thrilling 7.12 (54) to 7.5 (47) win against South Colac, and did not return to the match.

The undefeated Saints have now beaten the second-placed Roos, third-placed Lorne and fourth-placed Alvie in the past month, with only one game remaining against a top-five side.

But South Colac coach Tim Foley said the closer wins for the Saints; by seven against South Colac, eight against Lorne, and four against Alvie, showed the team was beatable.

“Birre are obviously a quality side, they’ve got good depth, you need everything going your way to beat them,” he said.

“We had enough of the ball on Saturday, we just didn’t use it as effectively in the second half and that was probably the difference.”

Star Birregurra midfielder Michael Bolitho slotted straight back into the senior team after returning from an overseas trip on Saturday morning, and James Rowan returned from a groin injury, but coach Ben Boseley, ankle, and key defender Jack Moorfoot, injured ribs, missed the clash.
