Petition for spending on south-west trains

Member for Polwarth Richard Riordan has joined with other Liberal politicians calling for the state and federal governments to put in cash to improve train services in south-west Victoria.

Six south-west Victorian Liberal politicians have joined forces to launch a petition calling for more state and federal investment in the region’s passenger railway.

Federal MPs Sarah Henderson and Dan Tehan, and state MPs Roma Britnell, Andrew Katos, Simon Ramsay and Richard Riordan hope the online petition will help attract investment to urgently fix the Warrnambool-to-Geelong rail line.

This includes more daily services for Warrnambool and Colac through to Melbourne, and express peak-hour trains between Geelong and Melbourne.

The State Government is responsible for passenger rail, but the Liberal MPs said dedicated Commonwealth funding would help the state plan and fund vital rail upgrades.

The MPs have also raised concerns about a lack of planning for the duplication of the rail line between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds.

The Federal Government promised $1 million to help plan the upgrade, but the State Government is yet to deliver a feasibility study or business case for this project.
