COLAC District Football League’s initial under-18 interleague squad boasts plenty of senior experience.
League officials finalised a 43-man initial squad following yesterday’s top-of-the-table clash between Irrewarra-Beeac and Alvie, which the Swans won.
Peter Hickey, Barney Maxwell and interleague coach Dave Henry had been involved in the selection process in the past month, which Hickey said had been a tough process.
“There were a lot of guys in contention, we added another four after today’s game,” he said yesterday.
“It was a matter of getting it right.
“Between Barney, Dave and myself, we’ve spoken to all the clubs about who’s playing well, watched all the teams and kept an eye on the best players.”
Fourteen of the players have tasted senior football this season, Alvie’s Jack Ruddell, Keenan Hickey and Tyler Flanigan, Apollo Bay’s Dustin Walters and Ezrah Robertson, Colac Imperials’ Jackson Henry, Irrewarra-Beeac’ Gabriel Spokes, Otway Districts’ Alan McKenzie and Dale Trotter, Simpson’s Beau Royal, Shaun Drayon and two-time premiership player Grady Rooke, South Colac’s Tom McKean and Western Eagles’ Jack Sherman.
The squad will have its first of four training sessions at 6pm Wednesday at Colac’s Western Oval.
The CDFL takes on the Mid Gippsland league at Colac’s Central Reserve on May 21.
