Council receives $2.2 million for roads, sports centres

THE STATE Government will hand more than $2.2 million to Colac Otway Shire Council for infrastructure over the next four years.

The council will spend $200,000 on its bid to gain

more money for the Bluewater Fitness Centre stadium and $200,000 on its funding project for a Colac Central Reserve upgrade.

A council spokeswoman said $361,000 of the $2,244,972 Local Government Infrastructure Program money would go to repair bridges over the next two years.

“The third and fourth year funding has not been allocated yet, because that will be the responsibility of a new council,” she said.

The government will also give $2,178,883 to Corangamite Shire Council and $2,377,966 to Surf Coast Shire Council from the infrastructure budget.

Acting Premier and Regional and Rural Development Minister Peter Ryan said the funding for 48 regional and rural councils would support key infrastructure priorities.

“The LGIP is giving regional and rural councils certainty to plan for and build new infrastructure or renew assets,” Mr Ryan said.

“The program is supporting local council initiatives to upgrade vital infrastructure including roads and bridges, as well as supporting the development of new or improved facilities such as halls and theatres, sporting grounds, grandstands, pools and libraries.”
