Surgery for hurt footballer

Nick Cole

An undermanned Colac Tigers reserves outfit has pulled off an inspiring semi-final performance after two key footballers were sidelined early in yesterday’s match.

Nick Cole, who was returning from an injured shoulder, lasted less than a half when the talented midfielder injured a knee, while fellow ball-winner Sam Cardinal’s day also ended in the second term when he was concussed during Colac’s heart-stopping 8.5 (53) to 7.7 (49) victory over Grovedale.

Tigers coach Mark Laurie said it was another disappointing setback for Cole, who was playing his first game since round 14, in the crunch semi-final at Geelong’s Simonds Stadium.

“We lost Nick Cole with a serious knee injury in the second quarter and Sammy Cardinal was knocked out, so we lost two of our better midfielders,” he said.
