Premiership boosts girls’ footy in Colac

Football in Colac received a major boost yesterday when the Colac Imperials’ under-19 girls’ football team won a premiership in its inaugural season.

Colac Imperials under-19 girls’ football coach Tim Hassett has labelled the team’s rise from newcomers to premiers in their first season as “unbelievable”.

The Imps defeated Grovedale in yesterday’s AFL Barwon Division Two grand final, 6.6 (42) to 1.4 (10), capping off an impressive first season of women’s football in Colac.

The Imps fielded two teams this year; the under-15s finished third in Division One.

Hassett said yesterday’s grand final win was a great way to wrap up a successful year.

“It may take a bit of time for the girls to appreciate what they’ve achieved, but it’s pretty significant and to do it the way they have is pretty special,” he said.

“Bringing girls together from all different clubs and demographics, and to have the development they’ve had from the start of the year to where they are now is unbelievable, so to get that reward is amazing.”
