National award for AKD

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson, left, and Agriculture and Water Resources Assistant Minister Anne Ruston, right, congratulate Colac’s AKD Softwoods chief Shane Vicary on his company’s national award.

AKD Softwoods has claimed a national forestry award for its innovation efforts and cutting-edge technology, which will make its Colac sawmill the most modern in Australia.

AKD chief Shane Vicary received the 2017 Innovation in Business Award at the Forestry Industry Innovation Awards at Parliament House in Canberra this week.

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson congratulated AKD Softwoods for taking out the prestigious award, describing it as “a wonderful credit to one of Colac’s major employers”.

“AKD Softwoods received its award for dedication to continuous improvement and the use of cutting-edge technology,” Ms Henderson said.

“In a first for Australia, AKD introduced continuous drying kilns in its Colac mill which increased energy efficiency by 30 per cent and reduced water use by 20 megalitres per year.

“AKD has also upgraded its Irrewarra mill with gangsaw technology which saw throughput almost double, and increase overall capacity by 25 per cent.
