Cricketers aiming to revive coastal club

Lorne’s 2009-10 Division Three premiership team in the Colac District Cricket Association.

The Colac District Cricket Association could have one more club next season, with Lorne campaigning to return to the competition for the first time in five seasons.

The coastal club last played in the competition in the 2012-13 season, in which it finished in 10th place in Division Three.

But with a newly re-surfaced ground at Lorne, which Birregurra’s Division One side used last season, former Lorne cricketer Chris Smartt said it was time the club returned.

Smartt set up a Facebook page called Lorne Cricket Club 2017/18, aiming “to get the club up and running again”, which had attracted 27 likes as of yesterday.

The 28-year-old, who is also heavily involved in the town’s football club with his brothers Kane and Sean, said plans for the cricket club’s return came about through a conversation with former players.

“It was over a few froffies actually, I was just chatting to a few of the other guys like Shane Trickey, Ricky White, Brock Shiels and Ryan Heathcote, they’ve all played cricket at Lorne over the years and some are still playing footy,” he said.
