A “disappointing” suspension to Colac basketballer Lewie Varley has paved the way for three young Kookas to have breakout games.

Teenage first-year Kookas Matthew Lloyd, Denver Murnane and Bailey Scott all impressed with their extra court time over the weekend, as did young guards Morgan Fenton and Nick Anderson.

Lloyd led the team’s scoring in both contests with 17 points in both games, while Murnane had 11 on Saturday and Scott scored 15
yesterday.

“Bailey was one of the better players on the court, he was a bit unsure early, but after a few words to tell him he’s got the ability to do it, he started to use his speed and decision-making which is really good.

“Denver and Nick got opportunities as well, Denver hit a couple of threes, he’s had some good moments already this year but shooting hasn’t really been an asset for him so it was good to see him knock down some shots.

“And Lloydy has just taken it upon himself to be a scorer.

“If you look at our group right now, we don’t have a lot of scorers, we’ve got workers and rebounders, guys who can pass and penetrate, but Lloydy can score and he’s taken it upon himself to get to the rim, and get to the free-throw line.

“He’s got a good mix of size and skill, he’s got a bit of developing to do but he’s really showing some positive signs.”
