PROGRESS: Contractors plan to complete the new Bluewater stadium floor by March, dependent on the arrival of flooring from the UK.

Colac basketballers and Colac Secondary College students could be playing sport at Bluewater stadium again by March.

Demolition of the stadium’s warped maple floor, which contractors installed in May last year as part of a $13-million Bluewater centre redevelopment, is set to start next month and the council hopes to have the stadium open by early March.

The stadium closed three years ago for the redevelopment but the new floor warped last year before the stadium could re-open.

Colac Otway Shire Council chief Sue Wilkinson said the completion of the new floor was subject to factors out of the council’s control including international shipping.

But Ms Wilkinson said the council would do everything it could to reopen the stadium as soon as possible and keep the community updated on the project’s progress.

“The demolition of the existing floor is scheduled to start in early to mid-December,” she said.

“In line with trade industry practice, there will be a three-week break over Christmas when no work takes place onsite.

“Flooring materials have been ordered for manufacture and shipping from the United Kingdom, as there are no local suppliers for the required engineered floor products in Australia; these are due to be delivered in mid-January.
