POLICE arrested an elderly Colac district man after he caused traffic chaos in Melbourne.
The 80-year-old from Chapple Vale, south-west of Colac, allegedly drove on the wrong side on the Westgate and Monash freeways for 15 kilometres.
Police believe the man’s vehicle might have also collided with “a number of other cars”.
A Victoria Police spokesman said police believed the man, who was driving a dark blue Mercedes Benz and towing a cream caravan, entered the Westgate Freeway the wrong way via an off ramp at Williamstown Road.
The spokesman said the man then allegedly drove across the Westgate Bridge and through the Domain tunnel.
Police say a truck driver alerted the man that he was travelling in the wrong direction and then helped him by blocking traffic while the confused driver did a U-turn near Toorak Road.
Police allege the Mercedes driver then drove inbound on the freeway, exiting at Yarra Boulevard, before police stopped him at Grange Road, Toorak, 10.20am Sunday.
Police released the man late Sunday afternoon pending further inquiries and have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
