DEPARTMENT of Primary Industry’s fisheries workers have euthanased a seal at Apollo Bay.
Apollo Bay police yesterday confirmed that fisheries officers destroyed a seal at the weekend but could not provide information about the circumstances.
The Colac Herald last week reported that visiting fur seals had bitten three people at the town’s harbour and the Department of Sustainability and Environment warned people to steer clear of the mammals.
Police couldn’t confirm yesterday whether the euthanased seal was one of the aggressive group.

If the seal was ill please inform us of the details – silence is perhaps guilt. How close do you need to be bittenby a seal? Pretty darn close! Stupidity of humans…easy to remove the ‘problem’ and once again the animals suffer. What about some effort keeping the humans away and let the animal live it’s life.
Perhaps the seal was ill? But of course it’s easier to condemn then think they might have done the right thing.
What’s wrong with these people? If fishermen clean their catch on the table provided by the DPI in front (within 10mt) of the seal, who is at fault? The DPI. Why didn’t they take it out to sea or some place away from humans? Killing the seal was not an option!
Why couldn’t they have shipped the seal to Sea World if all other options had been explored.
DPI, I had respect for you- PAST TENSE !!
