Polwarth players primed for tennis championships

POLWARTH District Tennis Association will award its top players at the end of an annual championship that kicks off this weekend.

The association will host the first stage of its McDonald’s Annual Tennis Championship at Colac Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday.

Elliminyt’s Khan Beckett and Pennyroyal’s Rhiannon White will hope to back up their titles from last year, when the singles and doubles matches begin on Sunday.

Reigning Division One champion Beth Loubey, left, and senior women’s winner Rhiannon White, right, will hope to defend their singles titles when Polwarth District Tennis Association’s McDonald’s annual championship starts on Sunday. They are pictured with McDonald’s representative Nikita Kretschmar.

Finalists will return the following Sunday for finals and mixed doubles.

Pairs Lisa Crabbe and Sue McGann, and Beckett and Brad Moloney, will also hope to defend their titles from last year.

“It’s always a popular day because of the family day atmosphere,” association secretary Cathy Maxwell said.

“It’s an opportunity for players to come and watch all grades, usually Saturdays they’re busy so it gives the juniors a chance to watch the seniors and the seniors can watch the juniors,” she said.

Sixty-five senior players have entered the championship, with 147 junior entries for singles, doubles and mixed with a record entry of 26 for the Division Two junior boys singles.

Warncoort’s Beth Loubey will return to defend her Division One singles title and Barongarook’s Kallan Thompson will be keen to add to his collection in Division One after taking out the Colac Lawn Tennis Club Junior Round Robin Title in November.

The day kicks off with the A Grade men’s and ladies’ singles and Division Two boys’ and girls’ singles at 8.45am.
