A DOMINANT performance in Victoria’s west has landed Colac’s junior representative basketballers five grand final appearances.
Almost half of Colac’s squads reached the final stage at a Hamilton Junior Basketball Tournament, with the under-14 boys’ A team bringing home grand final glory.
An undefeated tournament led to the young Kookas’ second title in three attempts after claiming victory at the Warrnambool Seaside Classic.
“They were really rapt, and the really pleasing thing is that our B team also made it through to the grand final but lost to Millicent who probably should have been in Division One,” coach Steve Lawrence said.
“It was fantastic to see Colac had so many teams in finals,” he said.
Victories against Maryborough, Terang and Hamilton led to the team making the semi-final where it defeated Mount Gambier 35-19.
The win had Colac brimming with confidence in the grand final against Terang and came away with a 34-14 victory.
“We probably had a bit of a lull after half time but our boys were in control the whole game,” Lawrence said.
“They’re all pretty athletic and they love their sport. They’ve got a lot of skills and it helps that they’ve been playing together for a few years now,” he said.
Among the other grand finalists were Colac’s under-12 girls, under-12 boys, under-14 boys’ B team, and under-18 boys while the under-16s missed out by a countback.
