A GROUP of Colac’s junior athletes hopes for success at a regional athletics meet at Ballarat this weekend.
More than 20 Colac Little Athletics stars will travel to Ballarat’s Llanberris Athletics Centre for Western Region Track and Field Championships on Sunday.
The squad includes Little Athletics record breakers Jalin Kite, Caitlin Serle and Holly Robertson and athletes can gain state championships qualification.
Colac Little Athletics secretary Louise Brown said the children had been training hard for one of the year’s biggest competitions.
“The numbers are down on what we had last year but it’s a pretty committed group and just about everyone is here for training every night in the lead up to it, which is great,” she said.
“Since early November we would have had two nights of training each week.”
Ms Brown said Sunday would be the first regional championships for younger members of the squad.
“This is probably one of the main competitions for them going into the regional event and all the kids from areas roundabout are coming to the event,” she said.
“As far as Warrnambool and Portland and Ararat and Cohuna and all round the Western District they’re coming.
“So there’s a fair bit of quality competition out there and if they achieve position in this they get to go to states in Bendigo in March.”
The Colac squad will compete in a range of events including discus, long jump, shot put, high jump, sprints and distance running.
Brown said the Colac squad would enjoy the experience win, lose or draw.
“That’s right, that’s what little athletics is about, having fun and enjoying participating.”
