A COLAC representative tennis team hopes to go one step further and claim a championship at a state-wide carnival.
Polwarth and District Tennis Association officials have sent two teams to the weeklong Victorian Country Week tennis tournament at Swan Hill this week.
The men’s team, featuring Kawarren’s Neville Towers, Ryan Towers, Barney Maxwell and Andrew Dodds, Forrest’s Josh de Jong and Pennyroyal’s Brendan White, will contest the B Grade competition after finishing runner-up in the B2-grade last season.
“Over the last couple of years Colac has had quite a few successful teams – this side finished second last year,” Maxwell said.
“We’re just hoping to have a good week and see where it takes us,” he said.
Kawarren number one Dean Towers was also set to feature in the squad but Victorian Football League training commitments with the North Ballarat Roosters kept Towers from making the trip.
“He was going to come down for a few days but they’ve got a compulsory training on the Wednesday so he couldn’t make the trip,” Maxwell said.
“It makes it a bit harder because he was one of our better players. We still hope to be competitive, but we won’t really know how we’re going to go until we get on the court,” he said.
The district’s women’s team, featuring Pennyroyal’s Rhiannon White and Nicole Beatty, and Kawarren’s Belinda Schultz and Brianna Towers, will also contest the B Grade division.
The squad reached the semi-final in the C Grade competition last season.
Matches against towns including Buninyong, Bacchus Marsh and Shepparton await the squads from today until Thursday, with finals on Friday.
