CRESSY bowler John Nelson has completed a fairytale run to win his first champion of champions singles title.
Nelson scored two shots on the last end of yesterday’s final against Simpson’s Peter Campbell to secure a 26-17 victory.
The Division Two Cressy bowler held his nerve as Campbell failed to peg back a nine-shot lead Nelson established halfway through the final at Colac Bowling Club.
Campbell attempted to mount a late fight back taking two shots in the second last end to bring the margin back to seven.
But Nelson’s steady bowling in the final end proved too much for Campbell and the six-time Champion of Champions winner congratulated Corangamite men’s bowls new top player.
Nelson, who had made the semi-final stage of the Champion of Champions in 2010, said he knew the final would be a tough challenge.
“I basically had nothing to lose I suppose coming into it from a second division sort of thing,” he said.
“He’s a performed bowler having won it six timesm so I just went in there and started bowling and started to get a few close and I sort of managed to hold him off.”
Nelson said he rarely felt comfortable against his seasoned Simpson opponent.
“I knew he’d come back of course and from a couple of the other games he’d had he was well down and came back and beat them,” he said.
“I had to sort of try and stick in there and keep getting a close one or two; it certainly was nice to win.”
Earlier, Nelson had accounted for Camperdown Division One bowler Geoff Roney in his semi-final while Campbell beat Colac’s John Lee.
Nelson will compete against Western and Far Western men’s champions at regional singles finals later this month.
