COLAC and district’s youth music events group is searching for new members as it prepares for a busy year.
Last year’s Year 12 members of Colac’s FReeZA committee have left to pursue their studies or careers, and group mentor Vicki Jeffrey said there were vacancies for new people to join.
FReeZA organises music-related youth events in Colac Otway Shire.
“It’s always good to have a group of seven to 10 people,” Ms Jeffrey said.
“The guys who’ve moved on have said if they’re around, they’ll come and mentor which is good,” she said.
“Some of them are moving down to Melbourne to study so I wouldn’t expect to see them at meetings.”
Ms Jeffrey said five people expressed an interest in joining FReeZA at last year’s Battle of the Bands regional final in Colac.
She encouraged other students to volunteer for the group, which could be a starting point for people interested in a career in the music industry.
Ms Jeffrey said FReeZA would organise at least three events this year – the second annual Colac Otway Outstanding Leadership Awards; a Next Wave stage at the Apollo Bay Music Festival and FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands.
She said the COOL Awards and Next Wave event would be on the same weekend in April.
“A third event may be a Straight Shooters event, it could be just a fun dance night for kids with a band, and Battle will definitely be happening in August.”
Ms Jeffrey said the youth group could also organise another event for Apollo Bay.
“We have talked about that maybe we need to go down and see what we can do in Apollo Bay for youth in that area – something not so Colac-centric,” she said.
People interested in joining FReeZA can contact Vicki Jeffrey or Cayley Robinson at Colac Otway Shire Council.
