COLAC Imperials netballer Abby Callahan never expected to line-up alongside the likes of Colac district netball star Narelle Frith.
But Callahan, 18, became part of a Colac squad headlined by Bomber Frith after she impressed representative netball selectors during a successful Colac Imperials season.
Colac District’s Western Region State League campaign kicks off tomorrow night against Cobden at Warrnambool’s The Arc.
Callahan, one of three new faces in the Colac line-up, said she looked forward to the chance to play alongside top Colac district netballers.
“I’m really privileged to be playing with such quality players like Narelle Frith and Nadine McNamara,” she said.
“It’s just fantastic to be able to be picked in the same squad as them.”
Irrewarra-Beeac premiership coach Leah Ousey will lead the Colac team which includes Simpson pair Jessie Hawkins and Paige Mason and Bombers goal machine Casey Johnstone.
Callahan said she hoped to improve her netball under Ousey’s leadership.
“The way she coaches is completely different to what I’m used to but it’s good to be able to see that side of things – to see it how she sees it,” she said.
“She’s really straight to the point and basically she knows what she’s talking about.
“Leah has told us we’ll be playing our best seven on the court and whoever matches up against a defender or a goaler or a centre, that’s how she’s going to be playing it,” she said.
“It’s nothing to do with how we’re playing it’s just what best suits the match-ups.”
Colac District is a former state-league champion and Callahan said she was keen to start what could be a successful year of netball.
“I’m absolutely pumped just to be in a side with all these names – it’s really good and I can’t wait to get down there and get it all happening,” she said.
“I’m really looking forward to playing and it’s going to be a really good year I think, and this will be the start of it.”
