Wayne Schimmelbusch, Peter “Crackers” Keenan, Mick Gayfer and Ron Barassi stopped at Colac for a rest during a fundraising bike ride for Melbourne charity St Mary’s House of Welcome.
AN annual Colac and district charity bike ride featuring AFL greats is gaining momentum.
Mick Gayfer from the 1990 Collingwood premiership team joined Ron Barassi, Wayne Schimmelbusch and Peter “Crackers” Keenan for this year’s ride to raise money for St Mary’s House of Welcome.
The House of Welcome supports homeless and disadvantaged people in Melbourne.
The team of 16 riders, who started from Port Campbell, cycled from Colac to Apollo Bay yesterday and will travel to Torquay today.
The football legends will end their journey near St Kilda on Sunday, expanding on last year’s ride to Geelong.
Gayfer said he heard about the ride through Keenan, his ruck coach at Collingwood.
“I jumped at the chance and I’ve got a couple of mates to come along as well,” he said.
“I look forward to doing the Great Ocean Road from Apollo Bay to Torquay, that’ll be nice riding.”
Colac businesses also benefited from the visit, fixing the group’s tyre punctures and car ignition problems.
