COLAC’S Charlie Tucker is an advocate of regular cycling.
The Colac Otway Shire Council information technology staff member discovered he had diabetes “a few years ago” and said cycling had helped him stay healthy.
Mr Tucker has encouraged Colac and district people to join today’s Ride to Work Day.
“If we don’t work on our fitness, it’s going to disappear right out the window,” he said.
“If people find it difficult to ride to work, they are encouraged to park out of town and ride the rest of the way in.”
Mr Tucker said cycling was a healthy and environmentally friendly way to travel.
People who ride their bikes on Wednesday can have free breakfast at Colac’s Bike Guru, which will also have prize draws on the day.
Mr Tucker is the captain of the council’s five-person Otway Oracles cycling team, which will ride in Sunday’s Around the Bay in a Day mass bike ride to raise money for the Smith Family charity.
He said this year’s Around the Bay ride would be his third.
“The first year I struggled a bit, but did make it without any problems; the second year, I maintained the pace for the team and we did get there,” he said.
“This year, more people are doing the 210-kilometre ride, from Melbourne to Sorrento to Melbourne. I’m doing the Melbourne-Frankston-Melbourne.”
