Miner pulls pin on coal exploration plans

Mining boss listens to the people

A MINING company stunned and delighted Colac district residents last night when it walked away from plans to explore for brown coal.

Mantle Mining managing director Ian Kraemer told more than 250 people at a meeting in the Deans Marsh Hall his company would walk away if a show of hands revealed overwhelming opposition to the project.

Mr Kraemer called for a vote, residents raised their hands in opposition and Mantle Mining’s boss declared the people had spoken and that was the end of the project.

The miner’s actions flabbergasted residents who had been prepared to dig in for a protracted campaign against Mantle Mining.

But mining opponents will ensure Mantle Mining is true to its word and re-launch protest action if the company does not withdraw its application to explore for brown coal south-east of Colac.
